Brother Lowell Anderson has taught 30 years, in Delta, Utah and Mesa, AZ. His hobbies include: Fly fishing, horses, biking, outdoors, reading Loui L'Amour, Zane Grey novels. Inspirational Thoughts: Beautiful young people are acts of nature. But beautiful old people are works of art. To handle yourself use your head: to handle others, use your heart.

Biography :

Brother Bartholomew and his wife, Kristen, are the parents of seven children, ages 8-24. They enjoy walking together. In addition, Brother Bartholomew is an avid biker. After serving a mission to Pusan, Korea, he received a Bachelor and Masters degree from BYU and a Doctorate in the Sociology of Education from the University of Buckingham in London, England. His passions include research, writing and teaching. He has published scholarly articles in academic journals in the United States and Europe and has written several chapters in various published volumes. His research interests include nineteenth century missionary work in rural Europe as well as assorted topics in Ancient Scripture and Church History.

Biography :

Brother Claybaugh and his wife Judy were both born and raised near the beaches of Southern California. He served a mission in Argentina, after which they met at an institute and were married in the Los Angeles Temple. They have six children and seven grandchildren. From 2000 to 2003 they lived in Costa Rica, where Brother Claybaugh served as a mission president. He currently serves as a bishop in Orem. He has been teaching in the Seminaries and Institutes for 25 years and loves working with the young adults of the Church.

Biography :

Lorey L. Draper was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from Highland High School in 1973. He served a mission to the Sydney Australia Spanish Mission from 1974 to 1976. After completing his mission, Brother Draper returned home, met and married the former Naoma Chistman of Soda springs, Idaho in the Salt Lake City Temple. Brother and Sister Draper have 6 children, four daughters and two sons and eight grandchildren. Brother Draper received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah. He later completed a master’s degree from Idaho State University. Brother Draper has been employed by the Church Educational System for 23 years. He has been a released-time seminary teacher in Idaho, an Institute Director and Coordinator in Colorado for nine years. Brother Draper has served as a Bishop in Idaho and Colorado. He also served as a Mission President in the Nevada, Las Vegas Mission from 2002-2005. He is currently serving as a counselor in his Stake Presidency.

Biography :

Brother Ryan Eggett was born in Salt Lake City and raised in Bountiful, Utah. He is married to Angela Bement and they are the parents of four daughters and two sons. Brother Eggett has degrees in music from BYU and is working on a doctorate at the University of Utah. He enjoys big game hunting, sky diving, and scuba diving although he has never done any of these (who has time for hobbies).

Biography :

Brother Gibbons came to the Institute in the Summer of 2000 from Mountain View by the way of Pleasant Grove, BYU, and Snowflake. His hobbies include: Writing, reading, traveling, drama, and family, but not in that order. Goals: I want to be a better husband, father, and teacher. I want to magnify my Church callings. I want more sleep. Favorite Quotes: "When a man takes an oath, he's holding his own self in his own hands like water, and if he opens his fingers then he needn't hope to find himself again." Biography :

Karen Hepworth is married to Ryan Hepworth and they currently reside in Lindon. Though a Utah native, she has lived in four states, and served her mission in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She has taught for the Church Educational system for over a decade. Before employment with C.E.S., she was employed at the Missionary Training Center. She received both her bachelors and masters degrees from Brigham Young University. She feels it is a privilege and pleasure to teach with such a gifted faculty, and to interact with wonderful students. Favorite Quote: "The Character of God," by Heber C. Brother Hugh has taught seminary and institute for the past 22 years - eight years in Las Vegas, NV and eight years in Houston, TX and six years at the Orem Institute. He has a beautiful wife and six wonderful children (five daughters, one son + two sons-in-law) and now a grandson. He served in the Netherlands, Amsterdam mission and earned a BA degree in Business from Southern Utah University and a MBA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He loves to speak at EFY, scuba dive, work in the yard, on cars, and on computers or whatever else needs fixing

Brother Hunter is originally from St. Anthony, Idaho. He served in the Germany Duesseldorf Mission. BA degree from Idaho State University in International Relations and Soviet Studies. MA degree in International Relations and Israeli Politics. He and his wife Linda have 5 children. Special Interests: Ancient scripture and Judaic studies, including ancient Jewish legends and customs. Old Testament and New Testament studies with special emphasis on the original Hebrew, Greek, and scriptural symbolism.

Brother Kauffman received his Bachelors degree from Arizona State University in Business Administration Marketing, and a Masters from Utah State University in Instructional Technology. He taught seminary in Northern California and Utah for 18 years. This is his 10th year at the Orem Institute. Brother Kauffman has 6 children and 5 grandchildren. He has been a bishop and is currently serving as the 1st counselor in the Cedar Hills Stake Presidency. His hobbies include: photography and ceramics.

Brother Longmore has been at the Orem Institute for six years after teaching with Seminaries + Institutes in the Pacific Northwest for seventeen years. Brother Longmore joined the Church his senior year of college in Omaha, Nebraska. He has found being a member of the Church to be one of life's great adventures. He received his B.A. in Elementary Education from Hastings College (Nebraska) and his Master's degree in education from George Fox University (Oregon). When he has time after family, church, and work, Brother Longmore enjoys reading, bicycling, hiking, riding in his Jeep, and puppetry. Favorite Quote: "Don't just keep the faith, share it."

Brother Loss and his wife Brinda have five childrena and live in Salem, UT. He was born and raised in Hanover, Pennsylvania, and joined the Church at the age of 21. He served a full-time mission ato Arizona Holbrook and has taught in the Church Educational System (CES) for 25 years. He loves teaching, being with the youth of the Church and aspects of CES. Brother Loss is a runner, loves all sports, and the chance to BBQ!

Richard K. Robins was born and raised in Orem, Utah. Following a mission to Ontario-Canada, he married his returned-missionary wife, Robyn, and completed a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Educational Curriculum and Instruction from Brigham Young University. His teaching experience includes ten years in the public school system and twenty-two years in the Church Educational System. Bro. and Sister Robins are the parents of five children and one adorable grandchild. Bro. Robins currently serves as 1st counselor in the Cedar Hills Utah West Stake presidency.

Brother Sackett has taught seminary and institute for 28 years. His assignments have been at the Timpview, Mountain View, and Orem High School Seminary buildings. He now teaches at the Orem Institute of Religion. Before coming to the institute full time, he volunteered here as a night time teacher for 9 years. He loves music, theater, and sports. He has taught gymnastics for a number of years. He attended Weber State College and served a mission in the Phillippines. He played rugby for BYU, received a Bachelor's degree in Television Production, and has a Master's degree in Evaluation of Non-Print Media.

Brian L. Smith has taught in the Church Educational System for more than 30 years. He taught for three and a half years in the BYU Religion Department while finishing his doctorate. (He earned his BS in botany and zoology, his M.Ed. in Secondary Curriculum and Ancient Scripture.) His PhD is in Instructional Science and Educational Psychology. He has completed various post doctorate studies at the Western Conservative Theological Seminary. Until his recent move to Utah valley eight years ago, he was the director of the Portland Institute of Religion adjacent to Portland State University for 15 years. He has served as Bishop of the 103rd Ward for over five years and in a variety of stake, regional, and area wide church callings, including several CES writing committees. While in Portland, one of his Institute classes was broadcast over five cable TV stations each semester for eight years. Before he took a position at the Church Office Building he served as an administrator for the Stake Institute program in Utah Valley. While assigned at the Central Office in Salt Lake City he served in College Curriculum and on Church Curriculum Committees. He helped design and write a number manuals used in religion classes throughout the Church. His research on the Book of Abraham has taken him to Egypt, Israel, Italy, England, and other European and Middle Eastern countries. Over the past 14 years he has traveled to the Middle East and eastern United States several times doing research on the Book of Abraham. He has helped document the history of the mummies that were taken from Egypt and shipped to America and eventually sold to Joseph Smith in Kirtland, Ohio, in 1835.

Brother Spencer comes to the Orem Institute after six years as the Director of the Provo Institute and seventeen years teaching Seminary and Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has a wife (Christine) and two children (one married daughter and one son). He served a mission in the Philippines from Nov. 1977 to Oct. 1979. He has earned a BS degree in Geology from WSU with a minor in photography and a MS in Special Education from UNLV. He enjoys photography, studying the Gospel, working on computers, and is an experienced scuba diver. He plays paintball with his son and loves taking pictures of paintball tournaments.

Colleen Terry has been a full-time instructor for the Seminary and Institute Programs since 1994. She served a mission to Michigan and taught at the MTC for four years. She received her bachelor’s degree from BYU and later received a master’s degree in Educational Technology. She has been a speaker for BYU’s EFY and Youth and Family Programs since 1992. She loves baking, hosting, mowing the lawn, organizing and teaching at this wonderful institute!

Brother Toone is a native of Charesholm, Alberta Canada. He has enjoyed 27 years with CES. His professional assignments have included teaching seminary in Riverside, CA, Wetaskiwin, Hobemma + Magrath, Alberta, as well as American Fork, UT. He taught institute at the Red Deer (Alberta) Community College and the University of Alberta Institutes. He recently enjoyed a Central Office assignment where he worked with various programs throughout the South Pacific and South America. His current assignment is at the Orem Institute. He and his wife, Karin, are the parents of eight children. They are currently expecting their 6th grandchild. Brother Toone loves spending time with his family. They especially love to travel together. He also enjoys time in the mountains, hiking, gardening, all sports and writing. He is happiest when he is behind the wheel, as he loves to drive anywhere. His heart was transformed into a "Polynesian" on his mission to Samoa and his greatest desire is to serve amongst the Islanders again in the future.

Blair G. Van Dyke earned his BA in English literature from BYU in 1989. At that time he was hired to teach in the Church Educational System (CES) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a professional religious educator, he has served in a variety of teaching and administrative positions, including graduate scripture studies instructor, school principal, and liaison between CES faculty members and university faculty and administrators. Van Dyke took a Masters of Education degree in 1992, and an EdD in 1997, both from BYU. His dissertation, "Education in an Autonomous Palestine: Palestinian Perspectives," explores the emergence of an independent Palestinian educational system after centuries of colonialism. Dr. Van Dyke served on the board of directors of the Education Center for Research and Development in Gaza and established the "Literature. Arts. Letters for Global Understanding" campaign, an ongoing community and educational engagement initiative between educators and students in the United States and the West Bank. Regarded as a leading expert on the history of Mormonism in the Arab and Israeli words, Dr. Van Dyke is the coauthor of Holy Lands: A History of the Latter-day Saints in the Near East (Covenant). He has also written a number of articles on biblical culture, history, and texts, including "In the Footsteps of Orson Hyde: Subsequent Dedications of the Holy Land" (BYU Studies). Van Dyke travels annually to the Near East to conduct research and guide travel study tours of the region.

Brother Weber has been a full time instructor with the Church Education System since 1978. He and his wife, the former Evelyn Blackburn, are the parents of six sons and now have four wonderful daughters-in-law and nine grandchildren and counting! Brother Weber has studied at Ricks College, Brigham Young University, The University of Nevada-Reno, The University of Washington and City University. He has degrees in Communications, Business and Leadership Studies. He has served a full time mission to the Texas North Mission and also served a mission working as a carpenter on the Nauvoo Temple. He loves to ski, surf, scuba dive, golf, tennis, racquetball, camping, and travel with his wife and family. "The foundation of peace, in this world and in the world to come, is only found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If you ever sit in my class and miss my testimony of the Lord and his love for us you haven't been listening. I love the Lord and through his love I have found a wellspring of love in my heart for my family, students, and all the Father has blessed me with."
