Come to Institute

“The thirst for education... can be a blessing or a curse, depending on our motives. If we continue to seek learning to serve God and His children better, it is a blessing of great worth. If we begin to seek learning to exalt ourselves alone, it leads to selfishness and pride, which will take us away from eternal life. That is one of the reasons we should always put spiritual learning first. And that is why the Church has placed institutes of religion across the earth wherever young members are gathered in sufficient numbers. Their spiritual education in the institute will shape the purpose and speed the process of their secular learning... If we will keep spiritual learning in its proper place, we will have to make some hard choices of how we use our time. But there should never be a conscious choice to let the spiritual become secondary as a pattern in our lives. Never. That will lead to tragedy. The tragedy may not be obvious at first, nor may it ever be clear in mortal life. But remember, you are interested in education, not just for mortal life but for eternal life. When you see that reality clearly with spiritual sight, you will put spiritual learning first and yet not slight the secular learning. In fact, you will work harder at your secular learning than you would without that spiritual vision." (Elder Henry B. Eyring, “Education for Real Life,” Ensign, Oct 2002, p. 14)

Transfer students Anna Burk and Whitney Mockler will be coming to us from BYU-I. Returning missionaries Paul Branham and Nick Kaczorowski will resume their studies at Purdue. Graduate students David Bensen, Grant Farnsworth, Matt Olsen, Stan Rosen, and Brent Warr have all committed to Purdue. We also have heard from Mike Plouviez. If you know of anyone else, please call us at 765-743-4632 so we can roll out the welcome mat. Thanks!

  • Student Wards in the area...

New students and YSAs often want to know where they should attend Church. There are four Church units in the Greater Lafayette area for the married students: Lafayette 1, Lafayette 2, Lafayette 3, and Lafayett 4 (Spanish Branch). All meet in the Lafayette Stake Center. Check the web for the Lafayette Indiana Stake on the Church website for further information on meeting times and leadership. The single students and YSAs attend the Purdue University (Student Single) Ward, which meets in the Institute on Sundays, with Sacrament Meeting at 9:30AM. Bishop Phil Low presides. Jacob Haderle is the Elders Quorum President, and JonAnn Gledhill is the Relief Society President. These individuals will be happy to help you become acquainted with the Church and the area.

  • Parking at the Institute

Due to the limited number of parking spaces in our lot, parking is by permit only and subject to regulation. (Additional parking is available on the streets and by the intramural fields, which are served by shuttle.) Motorcycles may park on the back sidewalk between the handicap ramps. Permits are available to registered institute students who are currently attending institute classes. See Sister Gibb or Brother Isenbarger for more information. Vehicles that are parked without permits, or parked blocking others, will be subject to towing and will forfeit their parking privileges for the semester.

  • 7 Summer/ Fall Mission Calls...

It has been a good season for missionary calls from our institute students. Departing in June were Joseph Haddock (Russia St. Petersburg) and Robert Astleford (Panama Panama City). August is the month of departure for Caleb Carriere (Brazil Santa Maria). In September we have 4 sisters leaving, all on September 23! They are Christi Galbraith (Paraguay Asuncion), Caitlin Peek (Alaska Anchorage), Ellen Chamberlain (Ecuador/Humanitarian), and Janae Miller (Puerto Rico San Juan). Congratulations and best wishes to all these missionaries. They will be outstanding!
