There are five student wards in Tucson. They offer the opportunity to attend Sunday services with other YSA's, participate in Family Home Evening groups, and enjoy lots of activities. The University 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Wards meet in the institute building, while the University 4th and 5th Wards meet at the Linden Chapel just one mile north of the Institute. Call us to see which ward you should attend.
History of the Tucson Institute
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints established the Tucson Institute of Religion in 1937 adjacent to the University of Arizona. The original institute building was located where the current institute parking lot now stands. The building was dedicated by church president Heber J. Grant. After many years, the original facility was outgrown and a new building was constructed in 1970 and dedicated by Elder Delbert L. Stapley of the Quorum of the Twelve. In 2008, the Tucson Institute building was renovated and continues its more than 70-year legacy of providing religious education and social opportunities for LDS students in the Tucson area.
Tucson Institute 1937 Dedicatory Prayer
President Heber J. Grant offered the Dedicatory Prayer at the Tucson Institute of Religion held on November 7, 1937. Here is an excerpt, "We dedicate to Thee the ground upon which this institute stands [and] the grounds surrounding it...We dedicate it to Thee for holy purposes, and pray, O Father, that Thy Spirit may dwell here. Inspire those who teach and those who listen, that all may be benefitted. May there never be any influence here that is contrary to truth and righteousness and that which is good and proper. May Thy Spirit abide here continually."
